Councillor’s seat safe

A Hornby District Community Councillor, Cr 1. Ganda, has not risked his seat because of his failure to attend council meeting since the local authority elections last year. A legal opinion tabled at a meeting of the council on Monday evening said that Cr Ganda’s. status as a councillor was established when t h e returning officer declared him elected after the 1980 elections. This

status could be challenged if the ■ councillor had been absent without leave from four consecutive meetings. Cr Ganda, who has been on an overseas trip was at the meeting on Monday evening, making it the first he has attended since the elections. He had been granted leave of absence. The issue was raised at art earlier meeting by Cr A. Y. Shuker, who said that Cr Ganda. was “not doing the job he was .elected for.”
