Irish rugby team announced
NZPA Dublin The Irish Rugby Union selectors, hit by the defection of a number of leading players on moral and business grounds, have named 10 uncapped players in a 26-man team to tour South Africa in May and June.
Only 11 players who took part in this season’sFive Nations championship have been included in the side, which will be without the backs, Hugo Mac Neill and Tony Ward, and the forwards, Donald Spring and Moss Keane, who opted out of the tour on moral grounds.
Fergus Slattery, who toured South Africa with the successful 1974 British Lions side/ will captain the team which will play seven matches including two Tests.
The team is: Backs: J. Murphy, K. A. O’Brien, M. Kiernon, T. J. Kennedy, A. C. McLennan, K. Crotwan, D. G. Irwin, A. Irwin, J. A. Hewitt, S. O. Campbell, P. Dean, J. C. Robbie, R. J. McGarth; Forwards: G. A. J. McLoughin, D. Fitzgerald, P. A. Orr, J. L. Cantrell, H. T. Harbison, B. O. Foley, G. Wallace, J. J. Holland, J. F. Slattery, J. B. O’Driscoll, C. C. Tucker, W. Duggan, M. E. Gibson.
