Desiree much fancied in first leg at Te Rapa

With the field reduced byscratchings Desiree has become favourite for the Carrington Handicap, first leg of the TAB double at Te Rapa today.

Six of the 15 horses which were in the Carrington Handicap have been withdrawn and three of them were last-start winners. Desiree finished third last time but that was behind a real up-and-comer in Ivan Bar and she failed by only two heads.

.Two starts previously Desiree won a 2030 metre event at Matamata, in a close finish with Mijosh. Ivan Bar and Nearpetual. one she will again have to beat this time. Nearpetual, a model of consistency with minor placings in each of his last six attempts is due to win. It was a game effort that gave him his latest placing, one as good would get him close again today. Tai Chief, a last-start winner, over 2200 metres at Te Rapa, and Perlistic have to be considered. Tai Chief, now five years old, has been a while returning to winning form but he looked a likely improver when third, two starts back. Blood Brother, a close relative of Blue Blood, is one of several interesting acceptors in the second leg, the r.R. Bodie Handicap. Be Mine, Count Ajax, Habitual. Curtsey, Chia, Fair Oats and Whittaker are others so the event is open to say the least.. Blood Brother is trained at Hawera but owned by his breeder, Mr Alan Thompson, .of Waiuku. He is a four-year-old gelding, by Copenhagen II from Blue Springs, a half-brother of Blue Blood, one of the finest sprinters of his day and also by Copenhagen 11. Blood Brother capped a run of minor placings with an easy 1600metres win in his last start, at Trentham on March 11. Clearly he is a fair way out of the ordinary.

Be Mine has won each ol her last two races, at Te Awamutu and at Te Aroha last Saturday. She has 55.5 kg but this amount is expected to be reduced 4.5 kg as she is to be ridden by one of the stable’s apprentices, Gary Dande. Selections:—
