Selwyn to get water
A 10-year wait by Selwyn residents -- for J their own -piped .water-supply ..has come to an erid. A 50 per cent Government subsidy for tlie $1.3 million supply scheme was approved earlier this month. County clerk, Mr B. W. Perrin, told a meeting of the! Malvern County Council that the ground work would begin in about three months’ time. ’ Preliminary planning ..had! already begun and the offrj farm part of , the scheme; would take, about - two years to complete, he. said. I . The-scheme will affect 53; farms, a total of about' 14,200 ha. of land. The area: involved is between the Hororata and Rakaia rivers as j far as State highway 72 at 1 Windwhistle!
The original scheme was to serve the qrea between the Selwyn and Rakaia rivers, as-. far as Fighting Hill. However, this area did not meet the: subsidy criteria. ; 1 ■ Each farmer in the scheme will be charged about $27 per ha. of land; this will be paid in instalments over three years. Off-farm work, which involves taking pipes from the well to the farm gate, will cost an estimated $630,000. On-farm work, taking the pipes to dwellings and troughs, will cost about $650,000.
A well and pump will be installed in the Selwyn River, from where the water will be pumped to a reservoir on the Bluff and grav-ity-fed to most of tlie area.
MOTORSPORT OBJECTION Motorsport on county roads did not receive the approval of one councillor. The Autosport Club had
[written to the council, asking, 'for permission to use some! county roads for the first :round of u four-part national; -rally: championship series. J “It is a waste of time and money. 1 have had enough j of these jokers,’’ Cr A. D. H. Scott said. i “Why should we have! roads in the county which I are so bloody appalling thatthey can use them?” he said. I Cr G. E. J.. Hutton dis-) agreed. “The track record of ■ these people, is pretty good; with - rallies in- the county.l We have never had a com-! plaint from the county) engineer.” he said. ■ The council approved. the; application, subject to the! usual conditions.
DOSING CARDS Farmers in the county will continue to be sent reminders to have their dogs dosed every six weeks. . Cr Scott said’that-postage; Costs could, be saved if .a; card giving 'dosing dates for; the year was sent to farni-i ers. .) “The card would: save; money for the ratepayers;’’; he said. Acting chairman. Cr. I.: Chamberlain said “this was! looked at - last . time, ■ but! there was concern at thei drop-off in -attendance where; the procedure was used.”. ’ ; Councillors felt. the larger) date card could easily be; lost. If was-,decided to con-| tinue- with -the’ old system) for another years ■ ■ j
