Dennis farm restocking

PA Wellington John and Susan Dennis, the couple at the centre of the recent Temuka foot-and-mouth scare, have visited the New Zealand Pig Development Company, at Levin, to discuss restocking and redeveloping their farm. The new breeding stock will comprise two consignments' of 40 sows,'with four boars to service them.

Restocking will be helped by the $50,000 compensation paid by the Government. Mr Dennis said that while the short-term effects of the scare had been bad, in the long term he would be able to modernise his farm, something he had planned to do for some time.

He said that his new stock of pigs would be fed on grain rather than garbage, thus improving breeding. Assistance has also been offered by the Ministry of Agriculture. “We are working on a two-year period to get back cur cash flow from the farm. In the meantime I am living out of my cheque book,” Mr Dennis said.
