Boxer seriously injured
NZPA-Reuter Atlantic City, New Jersey A professional boxer, Fred Bowman, of Youngstown, Ohio, was reported still in a critical condition but slightly improved in hospital yesterday after undergoing brain surgery following a bout in Atlantic City last Saturday. Bowman, aged 24, was stopped by Gino Perez, of West New York, New Jersey, in the sixth and final round of a lightweight match that was a preliminary on a card that saw the World Boxing Council (W.8.C.) light-heavyweight champion, Matthew Saad ]

After taking a pounding from Perez for most of the bout, Bowman protested when the referee, John Fitzpatrick, stopped the match only four seconds before the scheduled end. Bowman walked from the ring, but collapsed in the dressing room after complaining of a headache. A surgeon performed a 4|-hour operation to remove a blood clot from his brain at Atlantic City Medical Centre. It was Bowman’s fourth 'professional fight.
