Top tennis winners
United's durable Ralph Webster and Elmwood's relative newcomer, Peter McCormick, were the most
successful singles players in the BNZ men's senior tennis competition this season. Webster, at- No. 2 for United, and McCormick, at No. 4 for Elmwood, each won 10 of their 11 matches, one victory more than Hugh Robinson and Neil Pattinson (both United). Alistair Chapman (Woolston) and Brett Skjellerup (North Linwood). Eight wins were gained by Rhett Mason and Ken Elliott (both Elmwood) and Mike Purcell (North Linwood), and next, with six, were Colin
Hunt (Woolston), Richard Dalman (Elmwood), Barry Knight and Gary Harris (both Edgeware), and Ashley
Wearne (United). Since losing his No. 1 position to Robinson in the United team two years ago. Webster has been a towering figure in the competition, losing only once in 22 consecutive singles appearances. His only defeat was at the hands of Purcell, at a time when the United <man was still fighting off the effects of tennis elbow. This has been Webster's thirteenth successive senior season, and his singles record is now an impressive 75 wins
to 39 losses. Apart from a season for Fendalton in 197071. all his matches have been for United.
However, Webster's win ratio of about 65 per cent is surpassed by two of his rivals in the top group this season. Robinson and Harris, both of whom have achieved 76 per cent success. After six seasons of senior play Hugh Robinson has 46 wins from 60 singles matches, while Gary Harris, who has just completed his first season with Edgeware after eight with Elmwood, has 59 wins from 77 matches.
