Rare painting for sale

A rare Frances Hodgkins painting, bought in the early 1920’s for only seven pounds, when the New Zealand-born artist was extremely hard up, is to be auctioned next month by Christie’s. Included in an auction of modern British and Irish paintings, drawings and sculpture, the signed water

colour's present-day value is estimated at between $4500 and $7OOO. The picture, of three children with a parrot, has remained in one family ever since it was bought in Manchester in about 1922. • The owner, Mrs Felix Wagner, said it was bought

by her mother-in-law, who liked to encourage struggling artists and because she liked the painting. Mrs Wagner says'she has always understood that the three children painted by the artist are Rumanian refugees but it is not known where the 1 artist executed the work.
