Good week for swimmer
I Margaret Hesketh, aged; 114, of Wellington, completed a lucrative week’s swimming: at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre on Saturday. Swimming in the penultimate event of the New Zealand open championships, the women’s 800 m freestyle, she won her fourth title in four days of competition. The previous week-end she had won eight titles in the 14-years section at the Hansell’s national age-group championships in Feiiding. To cap the week she was selected for a national squad of 27 to prepare for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games next year. Two titles came to Canterbury’ on the final day of the; championships. Kim Dewar, who. was unplaced in the; 100 m breaststroke on Thurs-j day, won the 200 m final on Saturday. Several national awards were presented on Saturday. For the first time in 19 years, and for only the second time since its inception, a diver won the "Swimmer of the Year” title. Anne; Farghar,. who. competed successfully in several competitions overseas last year and won the silver ■ plaque .at the New Zealand (Games in January, was; iaward the Baxter O’Neilli (Trophy.- ' j ; The Yaldhurst Shield., which is awarded to the] centre with the most titles,| was' shared by .Wellington! and Auckland, each with 12 wins. ... I Monique Rodhal, of Auck-1 dand, won the International Award for the best time by a New • Zealander in comparison with a world record. Rodhal’s time, of 2min 17.29 s in the 200 m backstroke final at the Norwegian championships in Oslo in July, 1980. won her the award. Ursula Cross, of Auckland, won the Harold Pettit Tro- ’ ohy for the best performance at the ooen championships. Her 100 m backstroke winning time was only o.Bs outside her national record.
