Conference on literature

A conference devoted to Commonwealth literature, with special emphasis on modern writing from the South Pacific, is being held at the University of Canterbury in May. The conference is the second of its kind organised by the South Pacific Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies, and is the first such conference held in New Zea-

land. The conference will run from May 11 to May . 15. The convener of the conference is Dr Peter Simpson of the English Department at the University of Canterbury. Dr Simpson said the conference theme would be “New Zealand, the Pacific and the Commonwealth: nationalism, regionalism and internationalism in post-co-lonial literatures.” Papers would be given on

a wide variety of topics concerned with what are known as “new literatures in English.” The emphasis would be on writing in New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the South Pacific; the organisers hoped to gi.e some attention also to writing from such areas as Canada, . English-speaking African States, and the Caribbean.
