Uphill speedway battle
By
ROD DEW
New Zealand riders face a tough, uphill battle in the Australiasian final of the world motor-cycle speedway championship at the Liverpool track in Sydney today. Riding on home ground, the Australians are certain to be very hard to beat. And most of them have had the benefit of recent strong competition.
Only four of the 16-riders (eight from each country) will qualify for the next round of the world championship, the “Allies” final between Australiasia, England and the United States at White City, London, on July 19. There will be- no room for error.
New Zealand’s leading contenders are the six-tithes world champion, Ivan Mau-
ger, Larry Ross, Mitch Shirra and young Tony Briggs. Mauger, who bounced back from a bad patch to brilliantly win the national championship, a few weeks ago, is one who should qualify.. He has always been a great man for producing his best when the going is most difficult, and this situation will certainly appeal to his great competitive spirit.
