N.Z. consortium gets huge sub-contract
PA Whangarei A big new all-New Zea-1-nd consortium yesterday signed as the “preferred potential’’ main sub-con-tractor for the §550 million M.-.rsden Point oil refinery expansion.
this means although no firm contract has been signed, a letter of authorisation has, and the inside word is that the consortium will get the huge sub-con-tracting job.
The consortium, called The Refinery. .Constructors Joint Venture, consists of indu Trial heavyweights Fletcher Construction, Ltd, Downer and Company, Ltd, Wilkins and Davies Construction Company, Ltd, Robert Stone and Company, Ltd, and McConnel Dowell Constructors, Ltd. The letter of authorisation is for “mobilisation” efforts and miscellaneous early construction work. Yesterday the New Zealand Refining Company’s construction manager (Mr Mike Steere) confirmed that the consortium had the edge on competitors: “subject to satisfactory negotiations oh contract conditions and price they (the consortium) will have the main sub-con-tracting work on site.” I
The letter of authorisation was set out and also signed by the big Dutch-Japanese consortium Badger Chiyoda which itself is the preferred potential main contractor.
It too has no firm contract but like the New Zealand consortium has the inside running to get the overall contract.
Today Badger Chiyoda said in a statement that the RCJV consortium will start work with Badger Chiyoda in mobilising the refinery site for construction and will eventually’ undertake a “significant” portion of the refinery construction. “Work in Badger Chiyoda offices in The Hague and in Yokohama is progressing well — with the basic design 50 per cent complete and preparation of construction drawings started. “Plans for procurement of refinery equipment is being finalised and more than 150 technical staff are engaged in the design effort,” the statement said.
"Site clearing has started at Marsden Point and all activities are geared to commence permanent construction of the new refinery in March.”
Mr Steere said that the reason for the industrial double talk of "preferred po-1 tential” contractors was to
save valuable time on the! 'project which would have:, been wasted if first the: idesign had been completed: ■ and contracts let in the nor-; i mal wry. |; i Sub-contract work will: [meanwhile be limited to- | short-term minor site work,;, other preparatory work. '
