Patients put off

PA Auckland Non-urgent admissions, to Auckland Hospital have been halted because of the industrial unrest. Lack of transport meant that many of the staff, including nurses, did not report for work yesterday. Freezing works throughout the North Island and South Island were idle, transport workers in Auck-

land and Wellington closed bus services, pulp and paper workers at the Tasman company’s Kawerau plant were on strike, and the inter-island ferries were not running. Yesterday’s issue of the “New Zealand Herald” was reduced to a few pages and the “Auckland Star” was not printed yesterday because of action by the rotary engineers.

Other groups of workers on strike included: Workers employed on the gas pipeline from Huntly to Pukekohe;’ some railwaymen and clerical workers; Auckland watersiders; and Air New Zealand engineers at Auckland Airport. Seventy-three staff at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter last evening voted to join the strike.
