Brass family history
Sir, — I am carrying out research into the history of the Brass family, the majority of whom seem to have originated from South Durham/North Yorkshire in England, and northern Scotland. The New Zealand telephone directories list a number of Brasses and I would be pleased to hear from anyone of that name or with knowledge of a Brass. Not everyone now called Brass, however, originated from the Brass family. Some names are Anglicised versions of “foreign” names, while in other cases, the name has just been adopted. Early spellings of the name include Brasse and Bras. 1 have a remote connection with New Zealand in that an uncle of mine emigrated from County Durham in the mid-twenties but was found drowned at Christchurch in about 1932. Cousins of his, named Corner, became established in the Invercargill area. Any information, particularly of known connections in England, past or present, would be welcomed. —' Yours, , etc., JAMES O. L. BRASS, C/-Justin, 608 Harbour View Road, WHANGAMATA.
