Thermal lease ‘not final’
PA Rotorua The contrc -ersial lease for the ’.Vaimangu Valley has not. yet been signed, according to a spokesman for the Minister of Tourism (Mr Quigley). In January, the Government said that it had agreed to lease the valley, which was previously administered > - the Government Tourist Bureau, to private enterprise. The lease was to run for 33 years and would give the lessee, Waimangu Thermal
Tours, Ltd, right of renewal for a further 33 yc; After public opposition to the lease, the former Minister of Tourism, Mr Cooper, made public details of the agreement. The Rotorua “Daily Post” newspaper says it is believed that Mr Quigley will refer the lease to the A t . j r ne y-General (Mr McLay) for an opinion on its legality and that .a public statement on the lease is expected to be made within the next few
days. It says that Mr Quigley is expected to visit Rotorua for a personal view of the lease area.
A second public meeting will be held to consider the lease in Rotorua later this week. . The convener of the meeting, Mr B. S. Meder, said that it would consider the outcome of discussions with - Environmental Defence Society and would decide what steps to take next to challenge the legality of'the lease.
