Hohepa School fair

Samples of pottery, bread making, canework, and hand-made r~te paper will be on display at the annual faic on Saturday of the Hohepa Home School for the intellectually handicapped children. The fair will be held in the school’s grounds at 23 Barrington Street, and will start at 11 a.m. with work done by the school’s residents on display and for sale. The school practices the Rudolph Steiner, methods of care for those children who cannot make their own way in society because of theiy handicap. ’ \

Children can start at the live-in school at the age of about six, and rarely leave the school for the rest of their lives. The school started in 1965 at Hackthorne Road and later extended to its existing larger site. The residents live in . cottage homes with staff members and learn a variety of skills such as gardening, loom weaving, cugmaking, and spinning, as well as doing all the maintenance and cooking for the school. The annual fair is organised by parents and friends of the residents to help finance the running of the school.
