New sites for refuse examined
New hardfill sites for nonpolluting. refuse, such as builders’ waste, will be investigated. in Christchurch. The Christchurch Metropolitan . Refuse Committee yesterdaydecided to investigate areas with a view to either obtaining control of the sites or buying them. The advantages of such sites would be to lessen the risk of pollution of the underground water supplies of Christchurch and to prolong the .life of ordinary landfill sites by reducing the amount of refuse deposited at each. ” Y'.-
Cr D, C. Close, who proposed the recommendation, said that the establishment hardfill sites would probably reduce the, distance Itrucks had to travel to dispose of refuse,, and therefore reduce noise pollution in ureas surrounding landfill sitesj The Metropolitan Refuse
Disposal Committee also passed a plan for the composting of garden waste in a separate, bay ,at, the Metropolitan Refuse-Station to be opened in -Haytons Road in June, ... . “It is cheaper to separate refuse at the earliest' possible stage rather than wait until it is all jumbled up before trying to separate it out,” Cr Close said. Cr H. A, Clark said it was imperative that people be educated from the start about separating refuse material. It is envisaged that contractors and private users, will be allocated certain bags for garden waste.
, t .Cr I. G... Clark was worried about the ’number of rules and regulations growing with the. setting up of the station and believed it was essential to get the scheme working and then introduce . rules gradually.
