American golfer main attraction
An American, professional who has been based in Hamilton since arriving in New Zealand last October will be one of the main attractions in the Avondale and Harewood pro-am golf .tournaments this week-end.. Pat Mateer has wasted no time in showing his class and the American has taken the top prize money in half a dozen pro-am events in the North Island in recent months. Richard Coombes, a New Zealand World Cup representative and one of the country’s most promising professionals, is another attraction. Coombs finished equal fourth last year in the
Avondale tournament and was third at Harewood. The big-hitting Mike Moynihan, who was equal fourth in the Harawood pro-am last year, had some impressive performances on last year’s main New Zealand circuit and should find his trip south worthwhile. Other accomplished professionals coming from the North Island are Stephen Charles, second in the Harewood event last year, and Richard Ellis. Both tournaments have prize money of $2OOO and have attracted full fields. More than 200 have entered for the Avondale tournament on Saturday.
