$45,000 grant
Waimairi County has been allocated a $45,000 grant for a community hall by the Local Authorities Community Facilities Fund. This has been announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet), with grants totalling almost $BOO,OOO allocated throughout New Zealand. !
But it was unclear last evening which community hall in Waimairi Countv was the subject of the $45,000 grant. The County Chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) was unsure,' and the County Clerk (Mr J. D. F. Reid) could not be reached.
There are two proposed community halls, one on the as yet unbuilt on Parklands secondary school site, near the Parklands shopping area, and one on the Windsor Primary School site near Burwood Hospital. The Parklands hall, however, appears more likely to benefit from the grant. A community’ hall for Parklands was first mooted
'about 1974, according to the county’s activities officer Mr R. Cosgrove. The plans included arts and crafts facilities ,a kitchen .small meeting rooms, storage space for community groups, and room for a badminton court and indoor bowls. If the grant was for this hall, and if the Education Department, the owner of the land, approved the plans, the hill should be completed in about a year, Mr Cosgrove said. ■ ,
Other grants are: Akaroa County, $6000,' for the Le Bons Bay recreation pavilion;.’ Ashburton County, $20,000 for the Mayfield squash recreation centre; Buller County, $5OOO for the Carters Beach reserve; Eyre County, $16,200 for the Ohoka sports complex; Malvern County $15,000 for the recreation social hall; Wiimate Borough, $15,000 for the Waimate ..sports stadium; and Westland County, $20,000 for a community centre.
