Better prime cattle up $20

Addington Market

Prime cattle on sale at Addington market yesterday ' fetched rates which fully re- ! fleeted the alterations made in the beef schedule for this week. Values for better heavy ■ steers and heifers improved ■by up to $2O but lighter sorts did not sell as buoyantly. .Again too many overfat .prime ilamb.s were offered arid the limited competition showed interest only in the better lambs. Prime 'hoggets and two■tooths had a sound sale but old ewes sold erratically and values eased about 50c. | "‘Prime lambs I Oniv a small percentage lof the 1251 prime lambs offered (786 last week) hac. a reasonable sale. The rest were either over-conditioned or too light. The best price ; was $21.50 for a pen of ■ shorn Romnevs but most lambs fetched between $15.10 and $17.60.

The buying power was fairly restricted and this meant that the bulk of the ewes offered made less than $lO. The demand for ewes did fluctuate slightly and values improved during the 'middle stages of the sale. : Hoggets in the prime i sheep yarding of 2337 (1424 i last week) sold at rates sim'ilar to last week’s. Prime cattle The modifications made to the beef export schedule certainly showed their effects on the beef market. Top quality heavy steers and heifers improved as much as $2O but lighter weights, especially heifers, were harder to sell and maintained onlylate rates.

Another large yarding of 590 ’ (423 last week)

was reasonably easy to sell. Competition was strong. The cattle offered were generally of mixed quality and only a few outstanding pens were yarded. A Simmental cross steer from B. Gardner (Waiau) topped the market at $498. The best heifer price was $294, which was paid for cattle from several vendors, and a Friesian topped the cow market at $4OO. Steers . and . heifers to 220 kg sold between 129 c and 133 c a kilogram; between 220 arid 270 kg, 127 and 131 c, over 270kg,' to 131 c. Fat pigs The fat pig yarding was much larger than last weekand included some pigs of indifferent quality. Because of this buyers were selective. Only in isolated cases were last week's good values maintained and in most! cases the sale was back $5; to $6. I

Choppers were also yarded in large numbers and although these at first sold at lower rates, prices improved later in the day. Values were:— Light pork: $63 to $7O. Medium and heavy pork--72 to $BO. Store pigs The store pig yarding also increased in size and buyers were selective. Although an outside buyer was active, values declined by $3 to ss‘ Quality was very mixed. A feature of the market was an offering of in-pig sows which made from 240 to $320 and sows with litters which fetched $325 to $4OO. Values were:— Small weaners: $22 to $25, Good weaners: $27 to $33.
