Swimming assn rebuts Rowe’s statements
Statements to the media by Paul Rowe, the New Zealand swimmer who has accepted a scholarship to the Australian Sports Institute in Canberra, have brought a report from the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. It is concerned that the statements convey the impression the association does not have a good relationship with the New Zealand Sports Foundation. “The association has worked closely with the foundation in. seeking assistance for our top competitors,” said the chairman of the association’s swimming committee (Mr R. N, Smith). “It must be remembered that one of the criteria for assistance is that a competitor must be in the top 25 in the world.” Rowe at present is Just outside thatstandard. “Negotiations are currently under way for other competitors to receive assistance,” Mr Smith said. Rowe said that the standard of -conipetition was better in Australia but Mr Smith said all members of the international squad and the New - Zealand Games team, which included Rowe, liven an outline of tin
