Boyden Hanover colt fetches $25,000
By

A Sydney industrialist, Mr Jack Honan, of Sydney paid top price of $25,000 at the national sales of selected standard bred yearlings held in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Honan livened the sale when the colt by Boyden Hanover from Foaming Lass entered the ring and he opened the bidding at $20,000’ The colt’s vendor, the Marshland trainer, Max Thompson, was. firm on his reserve of $25,000 and Mr Honan agreed to pay that price. Last year Mr Honan paid $25,000 for a half-sister to the Boyden Hanover colt. Named Winning Queen she has shown great promise and has won twice in a light campaign, returning 2min 2s for one mile in a recent success. Foaming Lass, by Court Martial, is well-known as the dam of Wee Win, the winner of 19 races. A half-brother by Out to Win from Sakuntala, the dam also of Brad Adios and other fine winners, was expected to be one of the most keenly sought offerings. He was bought for $17,000 by a Kirwee trio of J. Seaton, A. K. Halligan and R. Payne. The colt was offered on behalf of Mr J. C. and the estate of Mrs J. H. Cummings, of Lawrence. Fillies did not meet with the expected inquiry; top price in this section being
$lO,OOO paid for one by Smooth' Fella from Bainbridge offered on behalf of Mrs D. M. and Miss A. J. Mitchell, of Mataura: The filly is a half-sister to Hurricane Kirk, Ambridge and other winners. The progeny of Smooth Fella met with a keen inquiry throughout the day. He had 12 lots sold for $105,350 an average of $8779. While there was a fair amount of despondency among vendors during the day and passings were frequent at times, the sale was a sound one taken all round. Buyers were most selective in the lots they wanted and showed little interest in the progeny of sires which have yet to prove themselves on the racetrack. The smallish Australian gallery was active infrequently, taking 25 lots during the day for $156,950, an average of $6278. Mr Honan spent $63,050 for six lots during the day, while the Brisbane trainerdriver, Ron’ Wanless r outlaid $42,550 for. 11 lots. Last year Australian buyers took 19 lots at an average price, of $6192, while a year earlier they averaged $5472 for 57 ; lots. While passings numbered 86, 113 lots were sold for $498,550, an average of $4411, much better than the average of $4056 for 122 lots last year, but below the best average of $5112 for 136 lots in 1979.
