Agreement on telescope

An agreement’ has been reached between th Department of Scientific and Industrial. Research and the University of Canterbury to make the construction of a one-metre telescope for. the.' Mount John university observatory a joink.project. In: return for the D.Sil.R.’s contribution to the figuring of the optics, their scientists will be allowed access to the telescope if they have an observing project to be undertaken. “There has been a good response to. the public ap-

peal for funds for the large instrument," said Dr F. M.. Bateson, secretary of the,, appeal. “We have parsed half-way in the total required ($200,000). This has enabled the university to place orders for the mirror-, blanks, which are expected to arrive in April.” The building v. to house the telescope will.be constructed before late 1982. Dr Bateson said it took much longer to figure the mirrors and make the telescope tuve and/ mounting than it did to erect a building.
