More wool wall-to-wall carpets
A West German trend io wool wall-to-wall carpets is good news for New Zealand crossbred wool producers. The director of carpet and textile marketing for the International Wool Secretariat, Dr Richard Janes, says that West Germany is one of the world’s biggest carpet wool consumers and there is already a strong market for wool carpet squares. But after studying trends at Heimtex..’ the world’s largest ‘ carpets and home textiles fair held in Frankfurt each January. Dr Janes said that German manufacturers were increasing production of the wool
tufted. wall-to-wall range as welt. From 1978 to 1979 the use of wool in tufted production increased by 12 per cent and there was also a significant increase in wool consumption in the woven sector as well. The trend appeared to be continuing, said Dr Janes, mainly because the manufacturers and retailers now realised that greater consumer demand and bigger profits could result from the quality end of the market.
Much of the existing wall-to-wall production had been in synthetics, but Dr Janes said that wool served the trade better than other carpet fibres in times of economic recession.
