Emphasis on pig comfort
Four day-old piglets from a litter of 12 nuzzle up against their mother at the Pork Industry Council’s new national pig breeding centre in the Manawatu. The council’s technical staff have carefully designed the new centre for what they term “pig comfort.” Thermostaticallycontrolled ventilators keep temperatures in each of the centre’s buildings within a degree or two of the ideal set for each age group. The expensive grainbased rations fed to most New Zealand pigs dictate that pork must be produced as efficiently as possible. This means that more and more New Zealand pigs are these days being raised in “pig palaces” like the council’s breeding centre. According to the council’s production experts, pig farmers are aware that only through attention to pig comfort and skilled husbandry can they expect to make a reasonable return from their pigs. It’s also the only way to ensure that consumers get high quality pork at a reasonable price.
