Firemen return to rubbish tip

Units of the Christchurch Fire Service were again busy at the McTeigues Road rubbish dump, Halswell, yesterday morning. Fire engines spent two hours at the rubbish dump bringing under control a fire which had re-ignited after being extinguished on Sunday afternoon. The Fire Service spent four hours at the dump on Sunday.

Fires at rubbish dumps are often deep-seated, and can remain alight and undetected in the dumps for many weeks until sections of rubbish are cleared.
