India has slim chance of win
NZPA Melbourne India fought back on the third day of the third: and final test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds yesterday to give itself a slim chance of a test win to end its otherwise disappointing tour. Facing a first innings deficit of 182, the openers, Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan, battled for almost two and a half hours to grind out their team’s best opening stand of the series. At stumps India was 108 for none, 74 behind Australia, with Gavaskar on 59 and
Chauhan on 41, but India still faces an uphill task because of its continuing in- . jury problems. The leading fast bowler, : Kapil Dev, has a ’ strained ! groin muscle, the off-spin- : ner, Shavlal Yadav, a broken • toe and the batsman, Dilip Vengsarkar, a badly bruised • finger. The first two sessions yesterday belonged jto Allan Border and the veteran, Doug Walters.; The Indians still want a total of at least 400 to have : any real chance of snatching ■ a win before their return to India.
