With 'the exception of the war years, when he was Director of'British Information' in New' York, he remained at Oxford until 1964, when he succeeded Dr Lewis at Cambridge University.
Professor Bennett was'recognised as one of the' leading Middle English scholars in. England. He edited numerous books, including works on Chaucer and early Middle English verse and, prose. He was a fellow of the British Academy.
