Dump fires keep firemen busy
Firemen spent 16 hours: controlling a 7 fire in the ( McTeigues Road rubbish; dump. Halswell, yesterday and made three visits in two days to another rubbish dump fire in Johns Road, Harewood. ■ The Fire Service was called to the McTeigues Road dump at 12.30 a.m. and a fire engine was stationed at the dump until 4.20 p.m., when the fire was brought finally under control. Another engine was called to a private dump in Johns Road on Saturday at 9.40
a.m. It left, about an hour and a quarter later, only to be recalled when tne fire flared up again soon after 6 p.m. Firemen stayed for an-! other four hours to bring' the fire under control, However, they were called out a third time yesterday' at 6.20 a.m. for a further hour. A spokesman for the Fire Service said the fires were deep-seated, and could remain alight and undetected in the dumps for . manyweeks until sections of rubbish were cleared;
