Concern about protest

PA . Auckland The protest at, the-Wait-, angi Day celebrations was described’ as unfortunate, deplorable, and sad at the New Zealand Polynesian Festival on Saturday. The chairman of the festival organising committee, Archdeacon King! Ihaka, in welcoming the Minister of: Maori Affairs (Mr Couch), expressed his concern about the. incident “on behalf of the festival council and the large . number of Maori people of all tribes assembled.’’ Later he said he tvas angry that the protesters, a minority group, had gained so much’ attention.

About 20,000 people attended the festival during the two days, and a half it was held:. The Taniwharau action group, representing the Waikato district, -won the festival competitions. The Auckland Anglican Maori Club took second place, and Te Roopu Manutaki from the.Waititi marae, third.
