Slow stand revives Aust.

NZPA Melbourne Greg Chappell and Allan Border steered Australia to a first-innings lead at stumps yesterday on the second day of the third and final test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Chappell scored 76 and Border an unbeaten 95 as Australia battled slowly to reach 272 for four in reply to India’s 237. Australia struck trouble early as the fast bowlers, Karsin Ghavri and Kapil Dev, took advantage of the uneven bounce on the controversial M.C.G. wicket. John Dyson and Graeme Wood took the score from the overnight 12 to 30, when Kapil Dev broke through. He induced Dyson, on 16, to push for a ball outside his off stump, and the wicketkeeper, Syed Kirmani, dived towards' first slip to accept the chance. Ghavri succeeded again two runs later. This time the ball lobbed to Dilip Doshi at mid-wick-et, and Wood was out for 10. • Chappell and Kim Hughes worked slowly and solidly to revive Australia’s flagging hopes of-building a big lead, but Hughes, with ony three balls .left to lunch, decided to attack the off-spinner, Shivlal Yadav. Chetari Chauhan, at midon, took- a fine falling catch to dismiss Hughes for 24, and have Australia struggling at 81 for three. ' But in; the second session Border, after . a nervous start, and Chappell held firm against an attack based
