American team too good for Canty

Two towering hits brought four of. Peterbilt’s runs when the Americans comfortably beat Canterbury, 7-1, in the first game of the softball double-header at English Park. The first of the automatic home runs came from the bat of Bill Stewart, regarded by some as the most dangerous batter in the world. Stewart’s hit in the bottom of the second innings narrowly missed , the television camera behind the flags at centre-field. Three innings later the Peterbilt designated hitter, Rich Frederickson, let loose with a similar blow just to the left of the flags. It came with two runners on. All the other Peterbilt

runs came in a near-night-mare first innings for Canterbury and its pitcher, Colin Sutherland. The first three batters, Billy Boyer, Dennis Makinen, and Stewart all scored and the team went right through its order — three runners were stranded on the bases. Canterbury actually performed well with the bat getting five hits, only one less than Peterbilt, but nothing too productive was done with them. No less than three runners (including Tony Bishop on a hit-and-run play) were trapped in a “hot box” situation between the bases. The only Canterbury run was scored by Wayne Poore, running for his captain,

Bryan Mountford, in the top of the fifth innings. Mountford was the top batter on either side with a .666 average. Ray Marsh, Marty Dawson, and Kevin Steel were the other safe hitters for Canterbury. Makinen, Stewart, Batt, Greg Flynn, Frederickson, and Lary Seabaugh contributed towards Peterbilt’s tally. For Peterbilt, Dave Marquardt took four strike-outs and gave up two hits and a walk and Jim Moore took three strike-outs and gave up three hits. Canterbury’s Sutherland and Robert Tongaroa pitched three innings each. Sutherland conceded four hits and two -walks, Tangaroa just the two hits.
