Woman’s death from burns
| PA. Nelson! ‘ An elderly woman' died in [Nelson Hospital on Tuesday: I night after suffering severe! burns on Tuesday in a grass! fire at her Mapua home. |3okm west of Nelson. She was Gladys Hadden Dennison,) aged 82. . I The Nelson police believe! Miss Dennison may have] been trying to burn rubbish] in her back garden when the: fire got out of control. A neighbour, Mr M-: McLean, saw smoke coming! from the Dennison garden? He ran to the garden and dragged Miss Dennison] through smoke and flames) away from -the fire.
“It appeared as if she had tripped over a stake, fallen backwards, and the stake had. caught between her arm and body. It made a large wound on her inside right arm,” he said. A bucket' was beside her, indicating she may have been trying to fight the fire. She was still conscious when found but died later in hospital from extensive burns.
