Lord Module likely favourite at Forbury Park
By
G. K. YULE
In spite of the huge ' question mark about the ; racing manners of Lord ; Module, the son of Lord- j ship is alnuut certain to ! start favourite in the ! Hertz Free-for-all at For- ; bury Park tomorrow even- , ing.
It was at Forbury Park last October that Lord Module returned two of the worst performances of his career. Since this his efforts, have, to say the least, >een mixed and he came under official notice once more when he failed to take any serious part in the Pan Am Mile on December 6.
The stipendiary stewards decided that two satisfactory trials had to be recorded before the stallion raced again. The second successful trial jtook place recently and Lord Module’s effort was more in keeping with that expected; from the horse which took j the “Horse of the Year” titlej last season. His owner-trainer. Cecil j Devine, is fairly confident! that he has ironed out the' faults developed by Lord I Module and he is hopeful: that he will show his true' form, especially with the! Auckland Cup only a fort-1 night away and a possible campaign in Australia not that far off.
Even so, Lord ■ Module could be all out to withstand the expected determined challenge from Bonnie’s Chance, unbeaten in her last three starts and rather unlucky in her racing before then. She has great speed and courage and could offer more than token opposition to the favourite. Another smart mare in; Royal Illusion will also have i to be considered. She has 1 yet to meet a field of thisj class, but the manner in; which she topped off some; strong intermediate fields i end won the Standardised •Breeders’ Stakes suggested' ■that she will not be out of; her depth. i Southerners will no doubt: stay with Sapling, as their big hope, but he is a probllem horse. On occasions he looks a world-beater, but in some of his other races he ha’s been a big disappointment. Possibly he could have benefited from the race he had when second to Bonnie’s Chance on January 5. If this is the case he could get into the finish. Lord Module’s stablemate. Sun Seeker, appeals most of the others and a placing by him would not surprise. Tongue Twister, Brase and Dundas form a likely trio in the first leg, the Jons Handicap, the first of a threerace series for four-year-olds at the meeting. Johnny Bilbo, Effie Watt, False Regal and possibly Armbro Wings are others entitled to consideration.
