Ay Em to test Caparo tomorrow
By W. R. CARSTON ! If predictions prove cor-| rect the issue in the Wai- , mate Centennial Cup tomorrow should be between Invercargill’s Caparo and the Riccarton-trained Ay Em. Caparo will be attempting to keep a winning record intact and Ay Em will be trying to improve on a recent string of minor placings in the first leg of the Waimate Racing Club’s T.A.B. double. Last time out Caparo came up with a winning run, and an impressive one at that, in the Clare Memorial Cup on the first day of the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting last Saturday week. Ay Em has had to settle for the role of runner-up in three races since his 1600 m success in the Waugh Handicap at Washdyke late last month. In each of those races, the Kurow, Reefton and Hokitika Cups, he was going 2000 m or thereabouts, the distance of tomorrow’s contest. Double D’Or. like Caparo. matvkkar fif hiphlv RIIC-
cessful Noble Bijou tribe, will probably strengthen the prospect of a Southland victory, while Catastrophe, Masteries and the consistent Markron are expected to be Wingatui’s best. Now that it has been established that Hi Roona will not be a starter and Scotch Mist is on the doubtful list favouritism in the second leg, the Strathconan Sprint, could well go to Timax. This Ashburtontrained sprinter was a laststart place-getter at Omoto a week ago and beat the open sprinters hands down at Kurow two starts earlier. The hardest for Timax to beat will probably be Dual, a stablemate of Double D’Or and a member of a highly successful team prepared at Gore by Rex Cochrane, who has saddled a host of winners at Waimate over the years. Dual will be going for his second win on end. He came back to his best form over tomorrow’s distance, 1200 m, at the Wyndham meeting on New Year’s Day.
