Carter’s final task
NZPA-Reuter Washington Mr Jimmy Carter’s presidency was ending on a note of high drama yesterday as : crowds hungry for news about the hostages gathered outside the White House and officials inside rushed about amid packing cases and clamouring reporters. The climax in the hostage negotiations transformed. the. executive mansion from a subdued backwater into a crisis centre for the last hours of Mr Carter’s term.
Nobody could recall a precedent for the situation: an outgoing “lame duck” President embroiled in big decisions as the clock ran out on his presidency. The publicity spotlight shifted abruptly from the gala celebrations in preparation for Mr Ronald Reagan’s inauguration tomorrow. The hostage crisis virtually crowded the preinaugural ceremonies off. television news shows and out of the headlines.
