Unloading thwarted

PA New Plymouth A move yesterday to have dairy produce unloaded front the strike-bound container ship New Zealand Caribbean at Port Taranaki was thwarted by a shortage of watersiders.

The Water Front Industry Commission’s Taranaki branch manager, Mr L. Howan, said at New Plymouth that only three or four watersiders were free to work on the ship and this was not enough to make up a container gang.

Watersiders returning to work today after the Christ-mas-New Year holidays would provide a 12-man gang for the ship if it was still in port.

The directive to unload the ship yesterday came from its owner, the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand. The corporation decided to discharge the cargo, which includes 5000 tonnes of milk powder, after talks aimed at settling a dispute broke down last week.
