Maori trainees

Sir, — B. Roberts (January 10) expresses perfectly my amazement at the incredible decision of the Maori Affairs Department (“The Press,” January 8) not to send any trainees to the Rehua Maori Boys’ Hostel this year and to withdraw funds for second-year trainees who want to return to the hostel — a decision which could result in the closing of the hostel after 28 years during which it has accommodated young Maori vocational trainees in association with, the fine marae on

the same site. At a time when it is estimated that between 12,000 and 15,000 young Maoris are unemployed surely the crying need is for more such accommodation to be provided, rather than for existing accommodation to be closed. The proposal is quite irrational and preposterous. — Yours, etc., M. A. BRADSHAW. January 10, 1981.
