Japanese builders upset by claims

Japanese shipbuilders are reported to be upset at charges 1 that they are undermining Euro- 1 pean firms in today’s slim market for new ships. J Mr R. Atkinson, chairman of British Shipbuilders, recently . passed on a -request from the 1 British Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher) for immediate Common Market action against Japanese shipbuilders, claiming : that Japanese builders are winning about two-thirds of all ship- 1 building contracts. He said that the Japanese are 1 using State aid to cut back competition and have, with Govern- . ment approval, formed a cartel among 40 of Japan’s 61 ship- . builders. : But the Japan Ship Centre in 1 London has denied this and has 1 indicated that it is tiring of the scapegoat image, which, it alleges, is foisted on it by Euro- 1 pean yards. The Japanese Shipowners 1 Export Association has denied that Japan is prepared to meet 1 other shipbuilders on what was . termed a “very sensitive matter” i and indicated there is now a J feeling of bitterness among 1 Japanese builders that the issue is becoming too one-sided against the Japanese.
