Transglobe at goal
The three-man British Transglobe expedition arrived at Scott Base in the Antarctic at 7.30 jp.m. yesterday (New Zealand time). * ... For Charles Burton, aged 39, Oliver Shepard, aged 36, and the expedition leader, Sir Ranulph FiennCs, aged 36, the arrival at Seott; Base marked a triumphant, end to an ordeal which has taken them across more than 2000 miles of some of the world’s harshest terrain. ’ -
According to an Antarctic report last evening, the three men were fit, well, and in good spirits. The first thing they wanted was
a meal. z The party would have arrived late on Saturday night, but a toboggan engine broke down, and a replacement, which was carried for the journey, had to be fitted.
The three men, supported by the Transglobe’a Twin Otter aircraft and crew, began, the Antarctic crossing in late October, passing through the South Pole in mid-December.
The officer in charge at Scott' Base, Mr Roger Clark, and. a party of 11 others went out Bkm to meet the three men, and guide them in, through the pressure ridges. Ono of the Scott
Base team, Mr Robin Hodgson, was on hand to “pipe” them on the last leg of the ./ journey. The 'expedition leader,' Sir Ranulph, is a former officer in the Royal Scots Greys.
The men will spend the next week or two filming in and around Ross Island until the arrival of their support ship Benjamin Bowring which is due to uplift them later this month. ’
They will then sail for New Zealand where; they plan to hold a series of trade exhibitions before continuing their round-the-world trip.
