Minister ‘petulant’

PA Wellington A complaint, by the Minjs-

ter of Maori Affairs (Mr Couch) that reporters’ requests about the number of Maoris unemployed was interrupting his holiday has been sharply ■ criticised by the Public Service Association.

“It was mere petulance for Mr Couch’s statement to be : entirely concerned with the disruption of his holiday and his anger at a departmental official (who released, the figures) and to disregard the issue itself.” said the association’s vice-president, Mr John Swinburn.

“Such disregard can only be cold comfort for these Maori school leavers who have •no work prospects for 1981 and their parents who are looking to Mr Couch for positive policies for their specific problems.”

Mr Swinburn was commenting on a statement from Auckland in which Mr Cquch said he was “damned annoyed” that a member of his . department released figureson Maori youth unemployment. “I am supposed to be on holiday and all I am getting is this flak,” said Mr Couch.

Mr Swinburn said the Government had no remedy, for burgeoning unemployment and Mr Couch had no remedy for Maori youth unemployment , ■ ,<■
