Horses to fore at Peninsula show

i. j r , w **ther on Saturday helped to make the Peninsula Horse Show and Pastoral Association s sixty-seventh annual show a. Duvanchelle a focal point for Banks Peninsula residents. The show attracted more than 2000 patrons and gate takings of ♦ 1200 ($1162 last year.) The dominant feature of the show was the horse section. The member of Parliament for Selwyn, Mr McLachlan, who briefly addressed patrons during the horse parade, said that the show was becoming largely a lighthorse show. The horse section attracted a near-record entry of 857 over the 63 classes from competitors throughout Canterbury. The sheep section had 85 entries, compared with 114 last year Dog-trial entries were 37, compared with 40 last year. The total entry over all for the *how classes was 1092 (1102 last year.) The association’s president, Mr G. P. J. De Latour, urged sheep breeders to maintain their support of this section in coming shows. Judges generally commended the high quality of livestock exhibited. Good seasonal conditions were given as a big factor in the quality of the livestock, wool, and the district’s produce. The champion-hack award went to Mrs B. M. Maley’s Ace of Spades, which won the lady’s hack class and the class for hacks carrying up to 70kg. It was also runner-up in the class for the best type of hunter. The reserve-champion hack was Lisa Morrissey’s Tristan. The best boy-rider award went to Mark Adorian, and Amy Sellar was judged to be the best girl rider. The Judge of the down-breeds sheep Mr J, T. Miles, of Methven, said that the entries of Suffolk sheep were excellent and that the top sheep would do well at any show. The champion South Suffolk ram, exhibited by H. C. Vanstone (Little River), was an exceptional carcase sheep. The judge of the fleece-wool competition, Mr D. A. Studholme, of Christchurch, said that this year’s entries were of a very high standard, with the amount of sound wools, particularly in the hogget classes, being most evident.

He said that the good season was reflected in the standard of fleeces. The consistency' of rainfall and steady growth throughout the year had brough fleeces to a high standard. The aggregate-points trophy in this section went to Dalglish Bros, of Le Bons Bay. R. Reynish (Pigeon Bay) won the supremehogget cup. Horse championships were. — Hack: Mrs B. M.
