U.N. conference supports Corso

PA Wellington Corso’s policies, which have cost it a tax exemption and drawn a lot of criticism, have been endorsed by a United Nations conference, according to the chairman of Corso, Mr John L’Estrange/ He has just returned from the triennial conference of the Freedom from Hunger campaign, action for • the Development Agency, of the United Nations. The conference: was held at Rome and attended by representatives of . leading development agencies from 31 countries.

Mr .... . L’Estrange saM Corso’s interest in the conference Was to check that its policies were in accordance with the developing countries and present thinking about the best ways to combat poverty. “I was very pleased to find that our policies were

the same ones that are being followed by many countries overseas,” he said. “We have been in the forefront of what is happening internationally.”

He said much of the discussion at the conference ha’ been directed towards finding ways for people to help themselves rather than making superficial changes in the form of aid. r : “It is encouraging to. find that what Corso has been doing is the right thing in spite of attacks to the con- : trar,. The policies .that we have been following are the ones that the people in the Third World want.”

Mr L’Estrange said the conference resolved to help build an awareness of the rights of the poor in the developing countries and educate them in methods of organising themselves and' meeting their own needs.
