Java training for officer

A former commanding officer of the Territorial Force depot at Burnham Military Camp has been selected to attend the Indonesian Army’s Higher Command and Staff College at Bandung, central Java.

In preparation for the course, Major J. W. Brown, of Wellington, has spent six months learning the Indonesian language at the Wellington Polytechnic.

He will leave for Jakarta later this month and will be promoted to lieu-tenant-colonel on his departure.

Until the course begins in May, Major Brown will live in the home of an In-

donesian Army officer to familiarise himself with the country’s language, customs, and culture.

Many Indonesian graduates of the college go on to fill key Government administrative posts and much of the 13-month course provides a grounding in Indonesian political and military philosophy.

During his career Major Brown has held a variety of command and staff appointments, including military assistant to the Chief of the General Staff. He saw active service in South Vietnam as second-in-command of an infantry rifle company and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry while he -was a platoon commander in Borneo.
