give him a combined total of 203.23 for the competition. The runner-up on provisional scores looks likely to be the Canterbury farmer, Lindsay Smith, with an aggregate of 202.25. Smith went into yesterday morning’s contest as the overnight leader, and looked to have the title sewn up after scoring two 35.5 s at the 300 and 500 yards. However, a small slip to 33.3 in
the final 600-yard shoot let in the Australian. Upper Hutt’s John Whiteman was next on 202.23. Other notable scorers were Okawa’s Morrie Gordon on 199.19 and Geoff Ayling (Tasmania) on 198.20. Early leaders Bruce Heath (Geelong) and Morris Callaghan (Westport) both collapsed with final rounds of 29.
Last year’s Ballinger Belt winner, Jim Blay, hopes to see Te Puke’s Diane Blaymires win the coveted shooting trophy today. “It’s got to come — a woman winning the championship — and I’d like it to be her. I think she has the temperament to do it. 1 went into the final shoot in fourth place last year, and came through to win it and I was only a B grader.”
