Barcas-Kia Maia colt fetches $47,000

PA Hamilton Three yearlings offered on account of the Cambridge breeders, Mr and Mrs T. B. MathiesOn, amassed a total of $93,000 on the second day of the Dalgety yearling sale at Te Rapa yesterday. ~ The first of the trio offered, a colt by Barcas from the Auckland Cup winner, Kia Maia, broke by $2OOO, the record set on Thursday for a yearling offered at auction in Waikato, when he fetched $47,000. A beautifully presented and well-grown chestnut, the colt is the second foal of Kia Maia. He comes from the great winning family which has produced Kia Marea, Manawanui. Pow

Wow, and Dynasty. The colt went to the bid of G.- T.. O’donald Investments, Queensland, which- also purchased the brown filly by Alvaro offered by Mr and Mrs Mathieson or $26,000. The filly is from Kia Rere, herself a winner and a sister to Kia Maia. The third of the draft sold by the Mathiesons, an attractive brown colt by Rocky Mountain from Kia Tai. went to the Rac Stud, Melbourne, which has purchased several of the higher priced lots during the two days of the sale. Kia Tai, by Empire Way from Kia .U, by Khorassan, won six times and is a half-

sister to Kia Maia. She is the dam on Finlay, which has won three times to date.

Australian buyers were active throughout the day, purchasing most of the higher priced lots including two colts which shared the second highest price of the dav, $35,000. The first of these, a chestnut by Crest of the Wave, is a half-brother to last- season’s leading two-year-old, Yir Tiz. He was purchased by Dalgety Winchcombe, Brisbane, acting as agents. A grey colt by Sovereign Edition from the winning Minuit mare, Karda Filou. also attracted a final bid of $35,000. Offered on account of' Mr S. J. Taylor, Cambridge, he was the only offspring of Sovereign Edition to be offered during the two days and he went to the bid of Coldon Stud, New South Wales. As on the first day, stock of One Pound Sterling were in keen demand, the best of these being a colt from the winning Hasty Cloud mare, Hasty Gay, which went to Dalgety Winchcombe, Bris-
