Mrs Thatcher’s policies

Sir, — K. W. Adams (January 6) defends economic principles that have repeatedly led us into recessions, wars then further recessions. My ideas are indeed at variance with the Government’s dependence on monopolistic finance houses that take all but. give nothing back to the grass-roots in times of their enforced poverty. It is totally ridiculous for a nation of but three million to be in debt — during peace-time — to almost $4OOO a head but no doubt this is an acceptable consequence of the system for the governing genii. The “Economist” survey is not required reading as I already know that Mrs Thatcher and Mr Muldoon are captive disciples of a most inconsistent system. I firmly reiterate that a deliberate policy of mass unemployment to offset other major shortcomings of that system is a real crime against the victims. To contend that the Government cannot change economic direction is a cynical contradiction of pre-elec-tion propaganda long to be remembered by the unemployed themselves. — Yours, etc.,

ARTHUR MAY January 8, 1981.
