Australian market
The Australian sharemarket chalked up its first loss of the new year yesterday as investors reacted to a sharp fall in international gold prices, a heavy shakeout on Wall St, and highlocal bond rates. Double-digit losses tn the mining and oil sector pushed the Australian all ordinaries index 9.6 points down to 718.4 at the close for the market’s biggest one-day drop since eariy December.
