Cutting channel in ice begins
The United States Coast Guard icebreaker Glacier has begun the annual task of clearing a channel through the .frozen sea ice to McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic. A channel about 180 m wide will be cut through 16
nautical miles of sea ice to allow cargo vessels and tankers to supply the American base at McMurdo Sound. The channel will also be used by the Benjamin Bowring, support ship for the British Transglobe expedition, and by tourist cruise ships from West Germany and Sweden. The Glacier took 15 hours to break her way through the first mile of sea ice, which was up to 1.2 m thick. She is expected to arrive at McMurdo Sound on January 21. Another Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star will soon be assisting the Glacier to clear the channel to McMurdo Sound. A starboard propeller of the Polar Star failed during the voyage from Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula to McMurdo Sound, but this was not expected to impede the channel clearing.
