Canterbury B in command

Canterbury B survived a series of early set-backs to be full on terms with Otago B at the end of the first day of their two-day cricket match at Hagley Oval yesterday. Canterbury B lost its first four wickets for 39. mainly to the lively left-arm bowling of Peter Hills but recovered to reach 192 and then took four Otago B wickets for 78. Peter Rattray, one of the Canterbury B openers, played attractively but it was left to the captain, Lindsay Thorn, and David Farrant to pull things round. They added 48 for the fifth wicket, Farrant making 40 of them with a convincing and entertaining innings, marked by the grace and power of his shots from the back foot. It was a tortoise and hare combination, for Thorn, after 110 minutes, had put together two singles. As he saw his side emerged from its difficulties, his batting blossomed and there were some attractive shots during a stand of 81 with Warren Eddington. Eddington took his time, batting two and a half hours, but there were some lusty hits from time to time. Hills came back to help wrap up the innings, and there was much to admire in the teasingly accu:; leftarm spin bowling of Chris Taylor who varied his flight ably. Trevor Sutherland's fielding at short leg was impres-

i sive, and he took a blinder a of a catch to dismiss Ashley 3 Hart. v lan Hogg played some t crisp and authoritative 1 strokes when Otago B battled, but Tony Farrant’s brisk ,(medium pace brought quick i! rewards, and there was some livery interesting bowling of file g-b rea k s by Bob > I Masefield.
